Trump Administration Tells Hospitals To ‘Share Ventilators’ Among Patients

Politico reported on Tuesday that the Trump administration is telling hospitals that they can split ventilators between two patients if there continue to be shortages of the critical breathing machines.

According to the report, Surgeon General Jerome Adams and Adm. Brett Giroir, the assistant secretary for health, wrote an open letter to health care workers explaining how they can perform the technique.

Politico reports that “They acknowledge they don’t know how effective or safe the strategy is because it hasn’t been tested in humans.”

Some groups representing critical care providers last week warned against ventilator splitting, arguing “it cannot be done safely with current equipment.”

In that same letter, the Trump administration is urging hospitals to put a hold on surgeries in order to use the ventilators for people who are desperately in need.
