Concerned about a criminal investigation into Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump on Monday defended his personal attorney as “a good man” and downplayed the potential legal problems surrounding the former New York City mayor.
The president was asked as he departed for a speech and fundraiser in Chicago whether he believes Giuliani will be indicted amid reports that he is under investigation by the Southern District of New York.
“No, I think Rudy Giuliani is a great crime fighter,” Trump said according to The Hill. “He was the greatest mayor in New York City history, but he’s been a great crime fighter.
“He’s always looking for corruption, which is what more people should be doing,” Trump added. “He’s a good man.”
Giuliani’s activities in Ukraine are reportedly the subject of an SDNY investigation. Two of his associates — Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman — have been arrested on campaign finance law violations.
Democrats subpoenaed Giuliani to testify as part of their impeachment inquiry into Trump, but Giuliani said he would not cooperate.
