‘Trump Is Going To Cause Violence Against Journalists’: Top Newspaper Editor Speaks Up

Let’s set the record straight: It is not the press’s job to stroke the egos of the powerful or to act as enablers, but to serve as both the guarantor of the free flow of information and the watchful eyes of accountability for our government, businesses and other powerful entities in society. But Trump arrogantly thinks the media is there to serve him.

Trump’s attempts to discredit the media and anyone who tried to hold him accountable for his lies and inconsistencies began laying the foundation to undermine the institution of a free press early on in his campaign.

During one of his many campaign tirades against the press, Trump even suggested opening up libel laws so news organizations could be sued for writing “purposely negative and horrible articles.” News outlets can already be sued for publishing false information in certain circumstances, but in Trump’s mind, negative and false are the same thing. If someone writes something that’s anything less than glowing about him, it’s “fake news.”

Unfortunately, his threat to press freedom continues from the Oval Office and his rhetoric has become even more vicious.

Now, a prominent media editor on Wednesday is sounding the alarm that President Trump’s rhetoric against the media will encourage some of his followers to commit a violent attack against journalists.

There are those “who don’t understand that this a cynical reality TV game and are going to hear over and over again from the president that the reporters, journalists are enemies of the state,” Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, told Yahoo News’ Katie Couric. Goldberg warned:

“Someone is going to do something violent against journalists in a large way, and then I know where the fault lies.”

He said that The New York Times and The Washington Post gain subscribers whenever Trump tweets attacks at them, which can make his attacks seem more like a reality-based TV game.

Trump has consistently attacked the press throughout his campaign and into his presidency, sending out a series of tweets Tuesday ranting at CNN over a Russia story the network retracted.

He again tweeted angrily about The Washington Post Wednesday after the newspaper reported fake Time magazine covers depicting Trump were hanging in his golf properties.
