U.S. Officials Blast Trump After Learning He Held Private Meetings With Foreign Leaders
On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal found that Donald Trump has been keeping U.S. government officials from speaking to other world leaders.
According to the report, U.S. officials are infuriated with the president for taking meetings with foreign heads without their input and without taking notes.
The Journal states that Trump would give out his personal number to world leaders in order for them to contact him whenever they felt like it.
However, this has created problems for American officials who are left in the dark about what the president is promising to other leaders.
“We never know who he’s talking to or what he’s agreed to,” one official told the Journal.
The biggest concern from U.S. officials is that Trump is promising other countries things the U.S. just can’t offer.
Foreign policy expert Richard Haass told the Journal that multiple foreign officials have called him asking for help figuring out how to understand what Trump and his administration really want.
“I should have a nickel for every foreign minister who has asked me to help decipher and interpret this administration,” he said. “They just don’t know how to read it. It’s been a nightmare for ambassadors and foreign ministers.”
