Donald Trump has been using his presidency to enhance his business and ultimately profit from it. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) has dismissed any concern over whether or not this is true.
“He’s already rich,” Chaffetz, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, told The Atlantic in an interview published Friday. “He’s very rich. I don’t think that he ran for this office to line his pockets even more. I just don’t see it like that.”
But, there are many reasons as to why people would assume that Trump is actually profiting from his presidency.
Since Trump took office, his properties have been attracting foreign officials and business leaders. And not just that, but Trump was finally granted 38 trademarks in China, something that he had been trying to do for over a decade. This leads to speculation that the trademarks were granted because of his presidency.
Chaffetz also ignored the question about Trump’s son-in-law, and White House senior adviser, Jared Kushner’s family exploring a $400 million deal with a Chinese company.
He believes that this in not worthy of an Oversight Committee probe.
“I don’t see how that affects the average American and their taxpayer dollars,” Chaffetz said. “Just the fact that a staff person’s family is making money? It’s not enough.”
