Donald Trump appeared on “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday where he was asked about the father of fallen soldier, Ryan Owen, not wanting to speak to him after the death of his son.
Trump responded by saying that the mission wasn’t his idea in the first place.
“This was a mission that was started before I got here,” Trump said. “This was something they wanted to do. They came to see me, they told me what they wanted to do, the generals, who are very respected — my generals are most respected we’ve had in many decades, I believe. And they lost Ryan.”
Trump also noted that the death of a son must be devastating, but didn’t want to take the blame for it. Instead, he put the blame on his predecessor.
“I can understand people saying that,” Trump said. “What’s worse? There’s nothing worse. But again, this was something that they were looking at for a long time.”
Trump was criticized for approving the mission without any intel briefing, and as NBC News reported Monday, the raid has not yielded significant intelligence. One of the biggest critics of the mission was Owen’s father. He demanded answers as to why the “stupid mission” was approved of in the first place.
“Why at this time did there have to be this stupid mission when it wasn’t even barely a week into his administration?” Owens said. “Why? For two years prior, there were no boots on the ground in Yemen — everything was missiles and drones — because there was not a target worth one American life. Now, all of a sudden we had to make this grand display?”
Even with failed missions like the Yemen raid, Trump still thinks his presidency deserves an “A,” as he told Fox News.
