Trump Just Hinted He Will Remove Sanctions From Russia After A Nuclear Deal

Trump held a joint interview on Monday with Times of London and the German publication Bild, where he accused NATO yet again of being “obsolete.”

During the interview he also hinted that the sanctions imposed after Russia’s annexation of Crimea could be eased in return for a deal to reduce nuclear weapons, and that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had pursued “catastrophic” policies on refugees.

Trump restated during the interview his doubts about NATO: “I said a long time ago that NATO had problems.”

“Number one it was obsolete, because it was designed many, many years ago. Number two the countries weren’t paying what they’re supposed to be paying,” adding that this was unfair to the United States.

Speaking in Brussels before a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Frank-Walter Steinmeier suggested the alliance was rattled by the remarks by Trump.

Steinmeier said he had spoken with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, “who is concerned that President-elect Trump regards NATO as obsolete.”

Oana Lungescu, NATO spokesperson, stated that, “A strong NATO is good for the United States, just as it is for Europe.”

But Trump’s friends, the Russian’s agreed with him. Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said on Monday, “the systematic goal of this organization is confrontation.”

Trump wants to make a deal with Russia to remove the sanctions that were imposed after they seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

“They have sanctions against Russia — let’s see if we can strike a few good deals with Russia. I think there should be less nuclear weapons and they have to be reduced significantly, that’s part of it.”

“But there are these sanctions and Russia is suffering lots from it. But I think there are things, which lots of people can profit from.”

“Sanctions are not a question on our agenda, neither internally, nor in discussions with our international partners,” said the Russian government following Trump’s comments on Monday.

Trump called German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s policy on refugees “catastrophic.”

“I have great respect for her, I felt she was a great leader, I think she made one very catastrophic mistake and that was taking all these illegals and taking all these people where ever they come from and nobody really knows where they come from.”

Merkel has chosen to stay quiet for now, saying she will not comment before Trump’s inauguration.
