Donald Trump’s lawyers are now trying to make a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller to end his investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia and also his investigation into whether Trump committed obstruction of justice for firing ex-FBI director James Comey.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump’s lawyers are looking to conduct a meeting with Mueller “as leverage to spur a conclusion to the Russia investigation.”
A source close to the investigation spoke to the Journal and said that Trump’s lawyers want the special counsel to “commit to a date for concluding at least the Trump-related portion of the investigation.”
“His lawyers have repeatedly laid out public timelines by which they expected the investigation to end,” the report noted. “Those deadlines have come and gone.”
According to The Journal, Trump’s lawyers have been put “under pressure” by the president to hurry up and end Mueller’s investigation.
The president is “eager to see the investigation wrap up as quickly as possible, describing it as a distraction that is hurting the country,” the report continued.
