A direct praise from an incoming American president for a Russian leader who’s been accused by U.S. intelligence agencies and President Barack Obama of directing a cyber attack aimed at influencing the 2016 election may sound like the stuff of fiction. But not if you are Donald Trump.
In the wake of an unprecedented Intelligence report released by the FBI, confirming the Kremlin meddling in the election, Trump decided to praise Russian President Vladimir Putin, after the Russian leader said he would not expel any U.S. diplomats from his country on Friday afternoon.
Trump tweeted, “Great move on delay (by V. Putin) – I always knew he was very smart!”
The comment came after the Obama administration announced its response to Russian hacking.
The Russian foreign minster announced earlier that he was recommending a symmetrical response, but Putin declared he would not expel any U.S. diplomats from his country, saying “his government would instead wait to see how relations developed under the incoming president, Donald Trump.”
“We will make further steps to help resurrect Russian-American relations based on the policies that the administration of Trump will pursue,” the Russian president said in a statement on the Kremlin’s website, The Guardian reported.
Putin, mindful that Trump will be in the White House in just three weeks, went on in an almost teasing way to wish Barack Obama and his family, and Trump and the American people a happy new year. He invited “all the children of American diplomats accredited in Russia to the New Year and Christmas celebrations in the Kremlin”.
Unable to see that Putin is just playing him for a fool, Trump warmly welcomed the Russian leader’s stance… But you shouldn’t be shocked.
