Trump Proposes Funding Tax Cuts For The Rich By Slashing Medicaid And Social Security

In his newly proposed budget, President Donald Trump plans a $1.7 trillion cut in food stamps, children’s health insurance, Social Security Disability Insurance and other social safety net programs to balance the budget and pay for his tax cuts to the wealthy.

Nearly 20% of Americans have a disability, and those people are going to see deep cut in assistance under the Trump budget.

As reported by Axios: “Where the entitlement cuts are made: From programs including SNAP (food stamps), CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program), and SSDI (Disability Insurance). The budget proposal will also assume that Trump can sign into law the American Health Care Act — the Obamacare repeal and replace bill that passed the House and is now being considered by the Senate. That bill makes substantial cuts to Medicaid.”

It is important to note that there are different Social Security programs. There is Social Security, Supplemental Social Security (SSI), and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSD or SSDI).

Donald Trump is literally paying for his tax cut plan where most of the benefits go to the very wealthy by taking food, health care, and income away from people with disabilities. However, slashing assistance to the disabled wasn’t enough, so his administration is also cutting Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

As the New York Times editorial brilliantly states, “the tax proposal is, by any historical standard, a laughable stunt by a gang of plutocrats looking to enrich themselves at the expense of the country’s future.”

The Times highlights the fact that the proposal was so empty of illustrative detail that few people could even begin to calculate its impact on their pocketbooks. Further, depending on where they live, some middle-class families might not benefit much or at all, because the plan does away with important deductions like those for state and local taxes.

While the Russia scandal has justifiably gotten most of the media attention, the Trump budget is a reminder that this administration and Republican-controlled are planning on moving forward with policies that will be devastating and in some cases life threatening for millions of Americans.
