Donald Trump claimed Friday to be National POW/MIA Recognition Day.” He tweeted out his respect for the men and women of the military that were Prisoners of War or went Missing in Action, but Twitter users were quick to remind him about the time he called Sen. John McCain not a hero because he was captured.
“The members of our Armed Forces shine a light of freedom throughout the world, and as we celebrate our returning heroes, we also remember our heroes who never returned home,” Trump said in a statement.
“On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, our Nation recognizes all American prisoners of war and service members missing in action who have valiantly honored their commitment to this great country.”

Twitter users were quick to respond to Trump and reminded him of his 2015 comments on McCain.
“He was a war hero because he was captured,” Trump told host Frank Luntz during the 2015 Family Leadership Summit. “I like people who weren’t captured.”
