Trump’s Plan To Avoid Legal Punishment Just Backfired
Donald Trump, who is in the middle of multiple federal investigations and lawsuits, will not be getting his way after judges refuse to delay cases following the government shutdown.
According to Bloomberg, Trump’s legal team tried to ask judges for extra time to prepare to defend Trump in several lawsuits but they were not granted the favor.
The Trump administration is embroiled in a number of lawsuits over his alleged acceptance of emoluments from foreign leaders, a law that restricts asylum claims and the policy of separating children from their parents at the border.
Lawyers for the Justice Department argued that they are technically barred from working when appropriations from Congress lapse. And since Trump decided to shut down the government for not receiving funds for his border wall, government lawyers had sought to delay hearings and filing dates based on that shutdown.
In a case in Washington, a judge denied the request to delay deadlines for a case regarding Trump’s restrictions on asylum, saying that it met an exception for government actions that relate to “safety of human life or the protection of property.”
