The Guardian reported this week that Donald Trump’s lawyer Jay Sekulow is under investigation in New York and North Carolina for alleged misappropriation of funds from one of his charities.
According to the report, both North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman are investigating Sekulow, whose Christian Advocates Serving Evangelism (CASE) paid his relatives than $60 million since 2000.
The law states that nonprofit organizations are forbidden “from giving excess benefits to the people responsible for running them.”
Sekulow’s nonprofit, CASE, according to the Guardian, trains their telemarketers to say that Sekulow “never charges for his services” when calling for donations.
CASE has also worked with Trump before. One of those cases being a lawsuit agains former President Barrack Obama over the Affordable Care Act’s birth control mandate.
Sekulow is now representing Trump in the Russia investigation.
