Donald Trump was laughed at by world leaders on Tuesday after he decided to give a campaign rally-style speech at the United Nations General Assembly and claimed that his administration has done more than any other in U.S. history.
On Wednesday, BuzzFeed News spoke to some of those UN diplomats and asked if they were laughing with Trump or at him. And it appears they were laughing at him.
“Sometimes, when we see a behavior or listen to arguments or notions that seem so far-fetched, unreasonable, or insane, there is almost natural reaction of laughing,” a Latin American diplomat told BuzzFeed News.
The diplomat claimed that they weren’t laughing because it was funny, but because it was so out there that it made them nervous.
“It is not laughing at a good joke, but a nervous laugh, or a bad joke turned laughable precisely because the guy who tells the joke doesn’t realize how bad it is,” the diplomat added.
Another European diplomat pointed out that the gloating comments made by Trump would pass at one of his rallies but it was awkward at the UN.
“What would resonate well at a political rally in America sounded a little awkward at the UN General Assembly,” the diplomat said.
“His words in the opening part of the speech were clearly addressed to [a] domestic audience,” they wrote. “But as he did it in the Trumpian way (bragging ridiculously about being one of the best administrations in history) people in the audience reacted how they reacted.”
Trump tried to play off the laughter by claiming that he meant to get some laughs.
“Oh it was great,” the president said after being asked about the laughter. “Well that was meant to get some laughter, but it was great.”
