Following Friday’s bombshell in the ongoing Russia investigation, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) called out Donald Trump for not cancelling his planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin despite indictments being handed down against 12 high ranking Russian officials accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential election.
During an interview with CNN’s Ana Cabrera, Cohen did not hold back in calling out the U.S. president for sticking to his plan to meet with Putin.
Cohen claimed that the indictments announced by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Friday “means we are at war with Russia.”
“I think Robert Mueller and his team have done an outstanding job. Robert Mueller is to be commended,” Cohen said of the indictments.
He then turned to the heart of the matter.
“It means we are at war with Russia,” he urged. “Russia is not a competitor, Russia is a foe. There’s no difference between what happened hacking computers and getting information and using it than going into the Watergate and burglarizing the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters. The Russians have interfered with our elections, they committed a crime, they are a foe. The president should not look at them as a competitor we need to get closer to.”
Cabrera then asked the Democratic Congressman if Trump should call off his meeting with the Russian president.
“Putin has consistently said I was not involved in the hacking of your computers, involvement in your elections, and the president has said ‘I believe him when he says that.’” he continued. “Well, the president can’t believe Putin, Putin is a notorious liar. Once KGB, always KGB.”
“For the president to meet with a liar — he cannot do it accepting what he has said,” Cohen added. “He’s as untrustworthy as [North Korean president] Kim Jong-un.”
