Donald Trump introduced a plan on Wednesday that will only allow people to immigrate to the Unite States if they speak English and if they have a set skill.
Top White House policy aide Stephen Miller was confronted by CNN’s Jim Acosta about the new policy, saying that it violates what the Statue of Liberty stands for.
Acosta recited the lines to the poem inscribed on the statue, which includes the lines:
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
Miller responded by saying that the poem doesn’t represent immigration in the U.S.
“I don’t want to get off into a whole thing about history here, but the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of liberty lighting the world, it’s a symbol of liberty lighting the world. The poem you are referring to, which was added later, is not part of the original Statue of Liberty,” Miller said.
Miller then peppered Acosta with historic immigration numbers, asking him what level of immigration would satisfy “Jim Acosta’s definition of the Statue of Liberty poem’s law of the land.”
Here’s the confrontation below:
Trump’s new immigration policy is breaking everything America stands for. It is a racist policy that will allow Trump to discriminate on who can come to this country or not.
It is a sad moment in American history where the free world is becoming a dictated land.
